31 May What is a Process Architecture Framework
When we talk about our Process Architecture Framework we are usually met with blank stares, clear disinterest, and, at times, a dismissive comment or two.
And we get it – this is not common language people use when discussing processes or process improvement. But – it should be.
Let’s explain why –
Imagine a kitchen and dozens of spice containers jammed into a cabinet any which way.
Imagine you organize these containers alphabetically by applying labels to the containers.
Imagine how good it feels to easily find, use, and maintain the spices now because the cabinet is organized in a way that makes sense to how you cook or bake.
Now –
Imagine how good it would feel to similarily organize your business processes.
Imagine having in place a taxonomy for all your processes in an accessible location with easy identifiers for all to use.
Imagine this taxonomy identifying not only what you do but explaining why, when, where, and how you do it.
Imagine extending this taxonomy to include visuals, cross-functional integrations, and standardized documentation.
Imagine not having to wonder where process information exists, because it’s collated and co-located.
Now –
Imagine not having to wonder what processes exist in your organization, because you’ve invested in capturing and sharing the critical knowledge that makes your business run.
Imagine being able to fast track a technology or service improvement, because you have foundational information right at your finger tips.
Imagine how freeing of time and energy this taxonomy can be so you and your team can focus on executing and improving.
Imagine.
Well, with a Process Architecture Framework you no longer have to.
What is a process architecture
To get all formal for a minute, a process architecture is “an organized overview of the processes that exist within an organization” (Dijkman, Vanderfeesten& Reijers). With an overview in place, an organization has the foundation and guidance for modelling their individual processes with the correct scope and depth
The taxonomy also can be extended in any number of directions to support and grow your business. Use it to create standard operating procedures (SOPs), define roles and responsibilities, evaluate technology efficiencies and integrations, spark powerful strategy conversations, and so much more.
Our Framework does this and a whole lot more – it compiles a taxonomy based on industry best practices, customizes to your business, and then extends to match your business needs and strategic goals.
Think of it as deciding on having a spice cabinet, investing in the spices, buying the labels, and identifying the organizing approach, and then using the resulting outcome of these actions to add sparkle and flavour and depth to what you’re cooking whenever and wherever.
Why a Process Architecture
We get it – the idea of a process architecture can sound like a waste of time. Why invest in process work and creating a ‘bunch of paper’ when we need to be working? We’ve heard this plenty of times.
To this we say – the health of your business is directly aligned to the health of your processes, your staff, and you.
Bad processes impact the mental health of the people executing them. Bad processes increase the total cost of ownership for tools and technology. Bad processes impact reputation and customer satisfaction.
Investing in your processes is just good business.
A process architecture is the governing asset for any business invested or wanting to invest in the process health of their operations. Without it, an organization cannot have a coherent and agreed upon view of how they operate.
And once created, it can be used for:
- visualizing and modelling activities and tasks,
- communicating roles and responsibilities for departments and staff,
- prioritizing process analysis and improvement,
- understanding technology interdependencies,
- advising on process enablers such as policies and environmental factors,
- and so much more.
Why not a process architecture
Doesn’t everyone want a healthy business?
A process architecture offers a proven, practical, and purposeful approach approach to bridging the disconnect between strategy and process, between mission and operations.
When designed and applied, our Framework shows people how they actively contribute to the creation, capture, and delivery of value across all organizational information systems. Such awareness can make them feel powerful, knowledgable, and a true elemental part of the overall business. This value awareness can provoke deep conversations and trigger meaningful collaboration across the organization.
In addition, the Framework offers an actionable view of your processes and their enablers like technology, policies, and external factors. This view, in turn, enables continuous process improvement cycles that will make you go “wow” time and time again.
Is a process architecture right for me?
Well, we think it is right for everyone – no matter the size of your business. But we may be a wee bit biased.
If you are a micro or small business, a taxonomy can help you grow and adapt. If you are large company, the framework can improve service delivery, inform your project portfolio and maintain alignment with your strategic plans.
The possibilities are extensive with a process architecture in place, and we work to ensure a sustainable solution for you that is informed by real world experiences and industry leading practices.
